The transition team at Caludon Castle School is dedicated to ensuring that the move from Primary School to Secondary School is a smooth and positive process.
The team consists of :
Miss R. Grisedale – Strategic Leader for Transition and Year 7
Mrs D. Lakin – Student Welfare and Support Officer
Mrs S. Webb – Deputy Headteacher (Overseeing Transition and Year 7)
Mr I. Johnson – Assistant Headteacher (Curriculum Transition and Transition Events)
Mrs J. Elmer – Assistant Headteacher (Supporting Year 7)
Also members of staff in the team have a great deal of experience in relation to Transition and are committed to ensuring that both students and parents feel supported throughout the process. Caludon Castle has several main partner primary schools including Richard Lee, Wyken Croft, Clifford Bridge and Ravensdale, but also draws from a range of other schools in the area. Our transition process can be divided into two main areas:
1. Social transition
At Caludon we recognise that the transition to a secondary school can be very exciting but also nerve wracking for students and their parents. As a result we have developed strategies to support this.
- The transition team visit all partner primary schools to meet prospective Caludon students in their own environment and to enable direct communication with Year 6 teachers. The information gathered in these discussions enables us to ensure that students are well placed in tutor / teaching groups and provided with relevant and personalised support, where needed.
- Year 7 students accompany the team to allow the Year 6 students an opportunity to find direct answers to their questions. In addition to this we support all students through a transition day and parents’ evening.
- For students with additional needs we offer extra support sessions including a coffee morning for parents of students from smaller schools or students who are coming to Caludon Castle from a school on their own.
- All students are invited to spend a full day at Caludon in the Summer Term, in order that they can meet their tutor and fellow tutees, learn their way around the school and experience some taster lessons.
- Parents / Carers of prospective Caludon students are invited to attend a parents’ evening in order that they can meet their child’s tutor, the Transition team and the school’s Leadership team and have any queries answered.
2. Curriculum transition
We have an Assistant Headteacher who works with our partner schools to develop ensure that there is continuity in the curriculum between Year 6 and Year 7. In addition to assimilating achievement and progress data on the students, curriculum content is also mapped between KS2 and KS3, to ensure that the move from Year 6 to Year 7 is as streamlined as possible.
As part of the Transition process, English, Maths and Science teachers from Caludon will deliver a series of lessons at our partner Primary Schools, which will then be followed up in the Autumn Term in Year 7 at Caludon. The focus of this scheme is currently ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ and provides a fantastic opportunity for students to develop their learning skills in all three subject areas.
